CraftRunner Liquid Glass Doming & Coating Resin

You can use Liquid Glass over Sealed Surfaces such as:
Wood, Photos, Dried Flowers, Sea Shells, Fabric, Seeds, Metal, Plaster, Baked Bread Dough, Decals, Transfers, Models, Rocks, Styrofoam, Pine Cones, Paint, Tiles, Badges, Bench Tops, Paper, Laser Photocopies 

Liquid Glass is a 2-part epoxy self-leveling, layerable coating, it drys to a thick gloss coating in about 8 hours, and a hard surface in 48hrs. Use it in a warm area, at or above 22 degrees. The resins must be warm. It is ideal for doming, coating artwork, and wooden crafts.

Please note: a slight yellow tone to the harder should not affect the castings.  

Step 1: Assemble what you need:

• A wooden mixing stick 859-7201 cut the end square with scissors.
• Some toothpicks (to pick out any dust before 25mins).
• A container to cover your work after debubbling, to keep off the dust.
• A light duty propane torch (available at Mitre10 or Trademe) see photo. (Refillable with a cigarette lighter container). Use this to remove bubbles.
• Nonstick baking paper to place under your work.
• A small, lint free rag just to clean up if you are messy.
• A little brush like our 863-5112.
• Some Methylated spirits or Acetone, to clean up.
• A warm DUST FREE, WELL LIT ROOM.
• Use tight fitting rubber gloves, and safety glasses.
• A bubble level to level your project BEFORE pouring.
• Some clean bezels and projects sealed and ready to go. Use Makers Glue Sealer / Glue. 10mls Code 863-2210
• And of course some Liquid Glass Epoxy Resin

Step 2: Seal your art work

First brush seal your photos, artwork, or wood, basically anything porous, with our Makers Glue glue Sealer, on both sides, wait until it is dry. Then trim to size. Using Craftrunner Makers Glue, glue the images into or onto your bezels, make sure you get a thin coat of glue over the entire surface to seal it. Wait until totally dry. What you are doing is sealing the surface so when the Liquid Glass is poured over it, your art won’t suck in the resin.

Step 3: Next the Liquid Glass:

NOTE: Make sure the pieces are on a level surface, use your level to check that the pieces are level.

You probably won’t have any idea how much Liquid Glass you will need. What I have done in the past is take a spare bezel and fill it carefully with water, right to the top, now tip it into your spare mixing cup and see how full it is. This is how much mixed resin you will need, plus a little more for good measure and wastage.

Dry and put it aside to use another time.

NEXT: Push out equal parts of resin and hardener into the centre of your dry mixing cup. This will be easy as the Syringe has measurements on the sides.

NOW: Take your wooden stick with the square end and stir fast, for 2 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom as you go, to get a smooth mix. A good idea is to set your timer for 2 minutes (its longer than you think) Did I say make sure it is really well mixed... YES.

POUR the mix carefully and slowly over your artwork, start at the center and let it move out to the sides.

Don’t over fill it, just get it level with the top edge. To get that raised look just add a few drops fromyour toothpick or mixing stick, but don’t let it run over. You will see a dome form around the edge.

OK now have a rest for a minute or three, after which you will see some small bubbles in the mix rise up. That’s alright. The next thing we will do is remove them.

IDEA: If you want to see what a liquid dome looks like, just fill a glass (which is on a bench) with water right to the top edge and add just a little more water and you will see a raised water level above the top. And stop there! Have some practice.

Step 4: REMOVING BUBBLES

As you see them come to the top, take your little propane torch on a low flame and hold it about 150mm away and sweep it smoothly across the surface without stopping. You are only using the low temperature end of the flame NOT the hot blue end. The gas pops the bubbles, not the blue flame. You must keep looking and sweeping at intervals of about 5 mins, for up to about 45 mins. After you are satisfied that there are no more bubbles appearing, cover your work with an upturned bowl. If you notice a fleck of dust has crept in, try removing it with the toothpick, and then re-sweep with the torch. Wait to cure, dust free about 8 hours and hard cure in 72 hours
